PC Crashing/Freezing

Crashing: Test after each subsection

  • Initial checks:

    • Check power cables are plugged for both components and PSU

    • Remove all overclocks including EXPO/XMP. (use the reset to defaults in BIOS)

    • Ensure that your CPU cooler is mounted properly, and your GPU + RAM are seated properly.

    • BIOS up to latest 'stable' version by manufacturer

    • Open up a command prompt in admin, type in and run "sfc /scannow"

      • After that also run "DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth"

      • Restart after both commands

  • Temperatures:

    • Paste this into your URL bar: https://www.hwinfo.com/files/hwi_834.zip

    • Unzip to a folder and run the ....64.exe

      • Select sensors only and then start

      • Watch your CPU/GPU temperatures, especially GPU Hotspot temperature (should be a maximum of 15C difference from GPU Core temperature and should be under 100C)

  • Crashing due to games:

    • Go back to 'Drivers - NVIDIA' and do everything again, EXCLUDING 'Drivers - Tweaks'

      • If on AMD just clean install the driver again

    • Limit game FPS

  • Crashing in general:

    • Realistically if you did the initial checks and it isn't fixed, there is either BIOS corruption (only fixable by using a USB and doing a BIOS flashback with the button on your motherboard) or you (a) haven't done the initial checks/need a full OS reinstall due to major corruption, (b) have a defective component.

Freezing:

  • Typically caused by RAM/VRAM unstable overclock, reduce or remove and test.

  • If overclocking CPU, reduce the amount of offset you have on voltages, most likely the edge case is showing up and therefore you are unstable.
