HQ games and more real estate (Nvidia Only)

Here's how to give yourself more desktop space and have higher quality looking games (and not require anti-aliasing anymore). Nvidia Control panel:

  • Manage 3D Settings

    • DSR - Factors: Enable both 2.25x and 1.78x

    • DSR - Smoothness: Preference, but usually above 50%. Set it to 60% (what I use) for now.

      • Use above as baseline, dependant on your perception, use this resource:

Windows:

  • Press Win + R at the same time for run menu

  • Type in 'cttune' and run

  • It will open up the ClearType Text Tuner - Untick the 'Turn on ClearType' box

    • If it is unticked already, you can skip to the next part 'MacType'. Otherwise, click 'Next'.

    • Speedo run any option until it finishes, do this for all of your monitors, the options don't matter

MacType:

  • Download from here:

  • Install it, run it (from the end of the installer or run 'MacType Wizard' in your start menu)

  • Once you have it open, select 'run in tray', 'administrator', 'compatibility' then click next

  • Then select 'Clean Dark' and then apply, then click Ok, then Exit

    • You can also install, both of which are used by OLED community (unzip them into the ini folder of the MacType install folder):

      • DeepGrayNoHinting

      • SoftGrayNoHinting

Now for the golden part, either in Nvidia control panel or Windows Settings, change your resolution to either the 1.78x or 2.25x resolutions:

  • 1080p

    • 1.78x -> 1440p (QHD)

    • 2.25x -> 1620p

  • 1440p

    • 1.78x -> 1920p

    • 2.25x -> 2160p (UHD)

That's it, more screen real estate, more pixels per inch and very little performance deficit if you use DLSS in the games you play with this combination, everything looks better and you can have better performance in games (using 1.78x + DLSS (performance | 66%) + No anti-aliasing). Some notes:

  • Make sure your windows scaling on your main monitor is at 100% for game compatibility (and some apps that don't play nice)

  • You can now go configure two parts of the guide to your preference:

    • DSR - Smoothness

    • MacType preset (You can even customize it or improve it using 'MacType Tuner')

  • Don't misunderstand the tech, your monitor can't run these resolutions natively, so don't even think of trying a custom stretch res above your monitor's native resolution.

  • Yes, you are still getting your nice high refresh rate at these better resolutions. Very nice tech.

  • If you plan on getting a OLED monitor or using a OLED as a monitor, come back to this and do everything but the DSR (DLDSR) at the VERY minimum. This will fix the fuzzy text.
